Before you cancel entirely
Before cancelling, check whether a cheaper tier or an annual plan would solve the problem. Annual billing is typically fifteen to twenty percent cheaper than monthly.
What survives cancellation
Music subscriptions are among the safest to cancel because almost nothing is permanently lost. Playlists, saved albums, followed artists and listening history all persist — the account reverts to a free tier rather than closing.
What stops working is offline playback. Every downloaded track becomes unplayable the moment the subscription ends, because the files are encrypted and require an active subscription to decrypt. If you rely on offline listening during a commute or flight, that capability disappears immediately rather than degrading.
Family plans and the member problem
If you are the owner of a family plan, cancelling ends the subscription for everyone on it. That is obvious in principle and routinely forgotten in practice, particularly when members are in different households.
If you are a member rather than the owner, cancelling your own participation does not reduce what the owner pays — most family plans are a flat fee regardless of how many seats are used. Telling the owner so they can downsize to an individual plan is what actually saves money.
Check where you are billed before you start
Music subscriptions are unusually likely to have been started inside a mobile app, which means Apple or Google handles the billing rather than the service. In that case the cancel option inside the service either does not appear or does nothing useful, and you have to cancel in the platform subscription settings instead.
If you are charged after cancelling
- •Keep the cancellation confirmation. An email or a screenshot showing the date is the document that resolves this, and it is much easier to save now than to reconstruct later.
- •If you are charged after cancelling, contact the provider first with the confirmation attached. Most reverse the charge without argument when presented with a timestamped confirmation.
- •If the provider does not resolve it, your bank or card issuer can reverse the payment. Card networks treat a charge after a documented cancellation as a straightforward chargeback, and the confirmation is the evidence you need.
- •For recurring card payments you can also instruct your bank to block future payments to that merchant. In the EU and UK, banks are required to honour this instruction even if the merchant continues to request payment.
