Before you cancel entirely
Before cancelling, check whether a cheaper tier or an annual plan would solve the problem. Annual billing is typically fifteen to twenty percent cheaper than monthly.
Subscriptions and usage credits are separate
AI services frequently bill in two distinct ways, and cancelling one does not stop the other. A consumer subscription covers chat access at a fixed monthly price. API credits, additional generation packs, and usage-based add-ons are separate line items with separate billing.
Cancelling the subscription leaves any usage-based billing running. If you have ever topped up credits or enabled pay-as-you-go, check that separately — it is a different page in most account settings and will continue charging indefinitely.
What happens to your history
Most AI services preserve conversation history and projects after cancellation, downgrading the account rather than deleting it. What changes is capability: message limits drop sharply, access to the strongest models is removed, and features like file upload or extended context are disabled.
Anything you would want to keep should be exported before you cancel. Conversations in particular are awkward to retrieve later, and some services restrict export on free tiers.
The free tier moves quickly in this category
AI free tiers have improved faster than in any other software category. A subscription bought a year ago may be paying for capability that is now available free. Before cancelling entirely, it is worth checking what the current free tier includes — for many people it now covers ordinary use, and the paid tier is only justified by volume or specific model access.
If you are charged after cancelling
- •Keep the cancellation confirmation. An email or a screenshot showing the date is the document that resolves this, and it is much easier to save now than to reconstruct later.
- •If you are charged after cancelling, contact the provider first with the confirmation attached. Most reverse the charge without argument when presented with a timestamped confirmation.
- •If the provider does not resolve it, your bank or card issuer can reverse the payment. Card networks treat a charge after a documented cancellation as a straightforward chargeback, and the confirmation is the evidence you need.
- •For recurring card payments you can also instruct your bank to block future payments to that merchant. In the EU and UK, banks are required to honour this instruction even if the merchant continues to request payment.
